What, how, where to use your NIE Number?

I’m located in Spain and since I got here I never had a credit card. A friend of mine told me that I would need a NIE number. And I was confused why would I need it? she said I would need it for my credit card application. Then I tried to look over the internet on “what, how, where to use your NIE Number?“. Good thing my friend told me about this and it’s really a big help!
